Musikmesse 09: SSL X-Desk

So here’s my pick for Best Gear of 2009 (so far): the SSL X-Desk. Just look at this thing. (pic here)
I mean…wow. Sanjay and I both learned just about everything we know about recording on an SSL 6000 and a Neve VR, so SSL consoles bring back some pretty good (and horrifying) memories. But the thought of POSSIBLY being able to afford a little piece of SSL in my place is just awesome.
At it’s heart, this is a 7U rack-mountable mixer featuring SSL’s SuperAnalogue technology. You can connect these things via D-Sub for up to 150 connections. But if you’re needing that, why not just buy a used SSL?
Let’s get down to it:
- 8 dual mono line input channels (16 channels)
- 8 insert sends/returns (integrate outboard comps, limiters, etc)
- Stereo cue and two mono aux sends
- Talkback system with dim & cut
- Independent monitor outputs (for main & secondary monitors)
- SSL Stereo Mix Buss! (This, for me at least, is one of the major selling points)
- 2 stereo returns with level, pan, and buss assignment
- Internal PSU
There’s more. But seriously, just look at that thing.
The X-Desk is available starting in May 2009 for MSRP $2,899 – a small price to pay to own a piece of SSL in your home.
